Selective Data Transition: The Goldilocks Option for SAP S/4HANA Migrations

October 5, 2021 Leonard Maganza

It’s no secret that enterprises have been slow to move to SAP S/4HANA. There are a number of reasons for this:  too many vendors, too expensive, too much complexity…not to mention that poor data quality brings unnecessary risk and the very real fear of losing prior SAP ERP Central Component (ECC) customizations that organizations have spent a lot of time and money developing. It all comes down to disruption – how do you deploy a technology which by its very name is disruptive with as little pain as possible?

For the longest time – and I can attest to this, as I’ve been overseeing complex data projects at Syniti for more years than some of my co-workers have been alive – the only way to bring in disruptive technology was to put in something new. Build it from scratch, load data into it and go live. But today, you can become a modern, intelligent enterprise – the very reason to migrate to S/4HANA in the first place – without the risk, long timeline and costs associated with from scratch implementations. How?

Selective Data Transition, or its more popular industry acronym, SDT, is how. With SDT, we make a copy of the current systems, remove the data, update the application, remediate that custom code and return selective data in near zero downtime. And here at Syniti, we’ve been delivering SDT projects for more than a quarter of a century.

Remember the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears? Let’s not focus on the fact that the main character, Goldilocks, committed a felony breaking and entering into a strange home. I’m talking about how she was searching for “just right” – whether it was porridge, a chair or a bed to sleep in.

I like to think of SDT as the Goldilocks option for S/4HANA migration. Each business is different — and for some, a Greenfield or Brownfield approach is better.

But for those that want intelligent, enterprise-ready data every time, I recommend SDT as the “just right” option.
